In addition to helping others, volunteering offers other benefits, such as increased socialization and better job prospects. If you’re looking for ways to give back to the community, here are three volunteer opportunities near our Fort Washington apartments:
Ronald McDonald House of Greater Washington, D.C.
The Ronald McDonald House works helps families with sick children. It opened in 1980 and allows parents to focus on healing their kids instead of worrying about affording a place to stay. Guests enjoy the homey setting, featuring private bedrooms and bathrooms as well as access to a full kitchen.
Volunteers play an essential role in daily operations. They help to offset costs by allowing the Ronald McDonald House to direct more of the monetary donations back into its programs. Tasks include sorting pop tabs, preparing meals, and cleaning the common areas.
American Red Cross of the National Capital Region
The American Red Cross responds to local disasters and helps communities prepare, prevent, and recover from life-threatening situations. The organization also supports military members and their families. It offers pre-deployment support and reconnection workshops, among other programs.
Volunteers carry out approximately 90 percent of the humanitarian work for the Red Cross. Positions vary based on interests and qualifications. Opportunities include working as blood donor recruiters, babysitter course instructors, and disaster preparedness presenters.
Capital Area Food Bank
Each year, the Capital Area Food Bank distributes over 30 million meals. It works with local farmers, restaurants, and community members who provide generous food donations. The meals are healthy, featuring fruits and vegetables, and incorporate items low in salt and sugar.
The volunteers make up some of the most important resources for the food bank. They perform tasks such as sorting, planting in the garden, and distributing produce at farmer’s markets.
